Do You Move When I Breathe?

I was getting out of my car one day and I noticed the trees near my driveway swaying in the wind. I felt the breeze on my face. It was so nice that I sat there for a while to enjoy the moment. The following morning I was reading by a window that faced the same trees. I looked and noticed them swaying again and the word “flexible” came to me. As I watched the trees, I noticed that they moved wherever the wind blew. One minute they would sway to the left and then a gust from the other direction would come and they would sway the other way. No matter how hard or gentle the wind blew, the trees went with it.

Then I heard the Lord ask, “Do you move when I breathe?” I couldn’t really say anything at all. It was one of those moments that you knew the Lord was probably going to show you something, but you weren’t expecting such a breaking statement. I say “breaking” because I was broken at His question. I knew the answer was no. At best my answer was only when I want to.

The Lord can and will use a hurricane of wind, a tornado to get our attention, but his heart is to woo us in the gentle breeze, hoping that we will sway in His breath. When he breathes one way, we should lean with it. When he breathes the opposite direction, we should adjust to the new breath. The most encouraging part for me was the longer I watched those trees, the more it looked like they were dancing. There was no real rhythm, but everything was graceful and there were no misses.

Later that day, I sat down at the piano with these thoughts still on my heart. I began to sing about dancing in His breath. It was quite nice, but then came the repentance. The Lord showed me a picture of a strong iron beam. I began repenting of a heart of iron, an iron will that does not budge in the breath of God. Hearts of stone that weather the wind instead of move with it. God soften my heart. I want to feel your breath on my face. I want to dance in your breathing.

Ever since then, at particular moments when I’m not paying too much attention, I’ll hear, “Are you going to move?” Sometimes He says, “I’m breathing, can you feel it?” And don’t you know that He only has to say it once for Him to have my complete focus. I can see myself getting ready for and anticipating the breath.
